Last Wednesday, Kelsea Ballerini co-hosted the CMT Music Awards! During the show, LANY’s own Paul Klein and Kelsea debuted their new track, “I Quit Drinking,” on the CMT stage. The song was released on all platforms immediately after the performance and just yesterday the music video premiered on Youtube. “I Quit Drinking” was co-written by Ballerini, Klein, and Nicolle Gaylon! The song showcases former lovers remembering happier times together and how neither of them can enjoy an alcoholic beverage since it reminds them of each other.
The video starts with Ballerini singing in a sunny field, but as the video continues to Klein’s individual next scenes, you can tell as the sun is setting and a rainstorm is coming to parallel the end of the relationship. The video concludes with Ballerini and Klein standing face-to-face, singing the song’s final choruses to each other in the middle of the pouring rain. The video seems to feel like a short film that really tells a story with a heart. Ballerini compared it to The Notebook, and we couldn’t agree more! Ballerini did a brief interview with CMT and she hoped that the fans get another perspective of the song and she hopes that it draws in new listeners from both the pop and country world. This video really brings this song to life. The visual of placing two things close together with a contrasting effect of them being dry, representing quitting drinking, to soaking wet which represents the messiness of the end of a relationship. This video, although quite simple, pulled out all of the stops when it came to the symbolism and movement. The rain was another simple addition to the video, but it really brings the tension of the story, lyrics, and melody to life.
