In the near future, airlines may soon be asking it’s passengers to step on the scale before boarding their flight. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently sent out an advisory to all carriers that they need to update the average passenger weight due to recent spikes in obesity rates.
Under the new requirements, carriers would have to update their standards of weight for passengers, baggage, and crew members. To obtain these new standards, carriers will ask passengers to voluntarily weight themselves prior to boarding. This will not be a requirement, and carrier have been told to select passengers at random. If that passenger declines, they should choose another passenger. These measurements would remain confidential.
